About the University of Wisconsin Madison Chapter
The mission of the SSSCR is to promote stem cell research in the community. We believe in the potential of stem cells to be developed into tomorrow’s cures for today’s incurable diseases. We exist to foster interest, knowledge and passion about stem cell research at the undergraduate level and continue to grow that interest.
Why Join SSSCR?
build connections with professors in cutting-edge research · volunteer teaching kids in the Madison area · discuss popular media articles and ethics of embryonic stem cells · learn avenues and techniques on how to get involved with research labs on campus

Officers
Greta Worley - President
Hi everyone! My name is Greta Worley and I am a senior here at UW studying neurobiology on the pre-med track. I work in the DeLuca biochemistry lab and plan to take a gap year after graduating this fall so I can continue to work and do research here. My favorite things to do in Madison are to watch the sunset at Monona Terrace and ride my bike on all the different bike paths!

Casey Ostheimer - Social Media
Hi all! My name is Casey, and I am a junior majoring in genetics and neurobiology. I currently work in a blood cancer and stem cell research lab introducing gene edits into leukemia and embryonic kidney cells. My future goals are to work in clinical research in the oncology field. In my free time, I enjoy biking around Madison, going to the terrace, and anything involving Badger sports!

Sam Neuman - Outreach Coordinator
Hi! My name is Sam, and I am a current junior in biomedical engineering. I became interested in stem cells after a friend of mine had an allogenic stem cell transplant. In the future, I would like to work as a physician-scientist to explore regenerative therapies for diseases of neurodegeneration. In my free time, I enjoy biking, swimming, and reading sci-fi. When in Madison, I make sure to swim in the lake at least once per year. My current research involves analyzing methods of gene editing in primates as a therapy for Parkinson's.

Alex Mendenhall - Treasurer
Hello! My name is Alex Mendenhall and I'm the treasurer for SSSCR this year. I'm majoring in neurobiology with a leadership and stem cell certificate. I did two years of research with stem cells in a cardiovascular research lab on campus, differentiating stem cells into heart cells and studying diseases. In my free time I do gymnastics here and lead a pre-med club called Pre-SOMA!

Shailaja Singh - Secretary
Hey! My name is Shailaja Singh and I am currently a third-year genetics major! I became interested in stem cells because of all the benefits it has for medicine and science as a whole, and therefore I am a strong advocate of stem cell research. During my free time, I write, make art, make music, and love to explore the outdoors! My favorite things to do in Madison are the farmer's market and all the cultural festivals. My current research is in a paleontology lab, which is also what I plan on doing after graduation.

Angelo Madruga - Recruiter
Hello, I am Angelo Madruga, and I am currently a senior majoring in biochemistry with a certificate in stem cell science. I was first intrigued to stem cell research when I saw a military veteran regrow much of his thigh by researchers allocating his own stem cells to the affected area. I am also an officer for the UW's club wrestling team, and on my down time I like to go to the gym and watch movies. My career aspiration is to become a physician scientist, and integrate the knowledge of both medicine and research to understand the development, repair, and regeneration of the musculoskeletal system.

Dr. Xinyu Zhao - Faculty Advisor
Dr. Xinyu Zhao is a Professor in the Department of Neuroscience who received her PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Washington - Seattle. Her research laboratory in the Waisman Center focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms that regulate neural stem cells and neurodevelopment with the goal of applying this knowledge in the treatment of neurological disorders and injuries.
